Cardinals History

The Cardinals purchased Red Jones from the New York Giants in 1939.

The Cardinals, in 1973, traded John Andrews to the California Angels for Jeff Torborg.

The Montreal Expos traded Ron Fairly to the Cardinals in 1974 for Rudy Kinard (minors) and Ed Kurpiel.

In 1977, the Toronto Blue Jays traded John Scott and Pete Vuckovich to the Cardinals for Victor Cruz and Tom Underwood.

Chunichi Dragons (Japan Central) purchased Gary Rajsich from the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985.

2023- Cardinals select Ryan Fernandez as the 7th pick in the Rule 5 draft from the Boston Red Sox
2023- Yadier Molina has been named Special Assistant to the President of Baseball Operations.

Birthdays

 

Carey Selph 1901 – infielder that played in 1929 for Cardinals and hit .235

Gus Mancuso 1905 – played 1928-1932 with Cardinals as a catcher

Don Padgett 1911 – in 1947, he smacked ten home runs in first season. Had a four year pause in baseball due to WWII

Jack Urban 1928 – Pitched in eight games in 1959 for Cardinals. 

Mike Mahoney 1972 – Caught 28 games for Cardinals in 2005.

Deaths

Charley Hall 1943 in 1916 he went winless for Cardinals at 0-4 for year 

Burleigh Grimes 1985 – pitched for 19 season and two for Cardinals. Selected to HoF in 1964. 

Clarence Beers 2002 -played in 1948 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was in one game and finished with 13.50 ERA.
